Tales of Pollard Oklahoma by those who lived there

This unique book was written by those who lived in the Pollard Community more than 50 years ago. It tells of life in the 1930s, 40s and 50s in rural Oklahoma, as it was when they lived it.

Pollardites now keep in touch by email, telephone and reunions. But at the time of these stories, there was no electricity, no running water, no indoor plumbing, no telephones. People walked, rode a horse or mule, or hitched up the wagon, usually with two mules.

Life was raw and harsh. Danger and death and sickness were everyday affairs. Yet this tiny community produced dozens of professional people - teachers, engineers, surveyors, publishers, accountants, nurses, etc. Here they tell their story of how they grew up, what happened to them, and what they learned.

Pollard is in the very southeastern tip of Oklahoma, four miles from the Red River and Texas, and a few miles from Arkansas. There are still only a handful of people there.

At the center of the community were the grade school and church. All the events in this book took place within 15 miles of Pollard.

Going to town was an all-day affair. The family hitched up the mules to the wagon at daybreak, drove the 15 miles to Idabel, bought what few necessities they couldn't grow, and came home after dark, with the creaking wagon lulling the kids to sleep on pallets in the back.

Motorized vehicles were few and far between. At one time the doctor had a pickup. The high school had a school bus that picked up kids for about 15 miles around.
